Qualifying
The first one to go out on the course was Eddie Irvine, but the track was still too dirty. The tires of his car could not give grip enough, he got big problems in some corners and finished the qualifying on last place at the end. Then Luca Badoer, the substitute-driver for the insured Jenson Button, drove out and did a pretty good job at his first grand-prix and held the pole-position for Tyrell until Damon Hill ran his turn. The other rookie, Kimi Raikkonen in his second Grand-Prix, had even more problems with his Jaguar than in spain and drove only to 11th place in the grid. Zanardi with the best time this day, could place himself in front of the two Ferraris of Frentzen and Salo. At his home-circuit in Zeltweg, Gerhard Berger did the second-best work in qualifying for the Williams-team this year and finished at 6th place.
Race
Angry about his last place in the starting-grid, Eddie Irvine did a very quick-start and closed-up to the other drivers, from Verstappen to Raikkonen, while they all reached the first corner at the same time where Villeneuve lost his first body-point. Damon Hill used his pole-position and occupied the first place until the third lap, during the first lap close followed by Raikkonen, Zanardi and Salo. Raikkonen overtook 7 (!) cars on the way from first corner to the Goesser-curve (corner 3 & 4) but spent a lot of tires doing that. The first seven cars all went to pit between first and second lap, the Williams-Team had no driver in the points at this time. On move 18 Heidfeld missed the 8th corner, then the Teamleader of Williams complained an error in the throwing-order and the Tyrell took back his move. Berger missed then on his try to reach the Jochen Rindt-corner, Heidfeld took his second chance and now made it into the corner. The Jaguar-Teamleader wanted his "official protest" about that to be published here.

After Raikkonen could not enter the first corner after his pit-stop, Hill and Salo (2 stops behind Hill) got a comfortable double-lead for Ferrari. To keep in touch with the Jaguar #7, Berger and Schumacher rushed with the sixth gear into the Remus-Curve (Corner 2), only able to shift down in 4th gear. Schumacher dropped out the next turn, Berger burned down his tires to the ground and spun. He had to start in 1st gear at the beginning of the long, long straigt. He had to let pass by all drivers except Frentzen, who began lap two on fourth place and fell back without any visible reason. Raikkonen, on his hunt for the leaders, spent 6 tire-points at corner 4 and ended his dream of a pedestal-place there.

Damon Hill drove the first corner of his third lap a bit too fast, lost some of his fresh tires, used his last brake and payed his last road-handling-point on an oil-spot. Therefore he had to drive the rest of the lap a little bit softer and Salo overtook his team-mate in the Remus-corner and won his second race in a row. Hill saved the second place. Meanwhile Heidfeld came to third place but because of his low fuel he could not hold this place to the end. Frentzen, who used his repair-points after the first lap, overtook some Jaguars while they where in the pits, had to drive over a oil-spot in the first corner and dropped out - first drop-out of a Ferrari in the current season, of course on a hazard, what else.
Throug the last corners a close fight between Heidfeld, Berger and Luca Badoer took place, on the finish-straigt the Williams used all the power of his BMW-engine and it's acceleration to leave both of the Tyrells behind him. Badoer also overtook Heidfeld on the last few meters and drove on 4th place in his first grand-prix. Zanardi and Raikkonen had to slow down at the end to save the sixth place and 1 point for Villeneuve.

The result of this race brought a triple-leadership in the recent championship for Ferrari: Mika Salo in front of last years champion, Damon Hill and Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
