Qualifying
The first car on the track was Jenson Button. At the beginning of his qualifying-lap he could not handle his soft tires and needed too much moves to get the rigth pace, then he spent a lap withbut any faults but too slow, so at the end just the fifth place was all, that he could get. The two other Tyrells was told to push harder and so they did, a bit too fast now and a few mistakes prevented a better rank than the 8th for Heidfeld and Verstappen.
Ferraris first driver for qualifying was Damon Hill, he did a good job and placed himself before Button. But then the Jaguar of Villeneuve rolled out, with a fantastic time (like always by a Jaguar) at the price of 5 mistakes sat him in front of Hill. But the battle of this two teams went on. Frentzen used some hints by Hill, therefore he drove a better lap than his team-mate. Zanardi tried to fight back but to much mistakes and 10 seconds longer than Frentzen made only a 7th place. Then the pole-setter of the last grand-prix, Mika Salo, did his turn and did an almost perfect lap, with the best time, faster than Villeneuve. The team-leader of Jaguar was absolutely shocked by this, he held the time-records of the league on ALL tracks until this day, he sent out Mika Hakkinen with the only job, to beat the time of Salo - but Hakkinen could not stand this pressure and failed. A double-pole for Ferrari was now real.
Last years pole-team Williams had a terrible qualifying this day, only the last three places was left for the boys.
Race
Side by side the two Ferraris at the front went in the "Tamburello"-chicane, too close to each other so they touched and Frentzen had to pay his first body point. The crowd behind fighted close for each place in the mist of the heavy rain, Gerhard Berger was the victim of this struggle and had to drop out by collision after only five moves! Frentzen at the front drove away, followed by Salo and Villeneuve. One move behind a couple of drivers fought for the 4th rank with changing success. On the way to "Piratella"-corner, Damon Hill could shortly get the 4th place while Zanardi and Verstappen missed the curve. But the Tyrell could help his team-mate Button which used the slip-stream of the car #5 to enter the curve. On the next turn, Verstappen risked too much and overshot the corner by 4 spaces. In the "Acque Minerali"-corner Mika Hakkinen took a oil-spot at high-speed, spun out of the track and crashed into the guide rail. Due to his heavy injuries he had to leave Imola in an ambulance-car and will miss the next two races. The leader Frentzen, had to go to pit to refresh his tires and to repair the damaged body of his car. Salo and Villeneuve also went to pit, still fighting for second place. Damon Hill, on sure 4th place meanwhile, had also to repair his body two moves after Frentzen, the cars on places 5 to 7 also went to their mechanics.

After a perfect first lap, now Frentzen got a little problems around the 4th corner. First he missed it on the first try, next turn he overshot by 4 spaces, only two tires left for the rest of the lap. But Villeneuve and Salo also failed this corner, so Damon Hill took his chance to close up which lead to a triple-lead for ferrari on the next turn and they could hold it until the beginning of lap 3. Seven moves behind the leader Verstappen and Zanardi fought hard for the 10th and last place. Tyrell continued the bad performance today, best car of this team placed on 6th at this time. After a terrible first lap, Ralph Schumacher had smoothly moved forward to 5th place during 2nd lap. Eight of the nine cars left over drove in the pit-stands, Jos Verstappen 8 moves after the leader Frentzen.

As lucky as Frentzen was in the first two laps, it looked like nobody could steal him the victory, even a triple-victory for Ferrari was possible at this moment, now it became a hard time for the german driver. During the third lap he failed almost everytime to reach a corner from the "Piratella"-corner to the 7th curve and lost 5 of his 7 tire-points on the way. Salo did not much better, therefore Villeneuve and Hill used the chance and closed up to the leader.
On move 36 the Ferraris and the Jaguar reached the "Rivazza"-curve side by side, Frentzen on the outside lane, Hill in the middle and Villeneuve directly behind Hill with almost all tires left. To save the last chance of the first victory in a wet race for Ferrari, only able to drive in third gear anymore, Hill stayed in the middle and Frentzen threw to the inside lane, both spending their last tire-points, to force Villeneuve also to shift down in the third gear. But the canadian kid was very frightened about this manouvre, didn't find the right gear, stayed in 4th and with full speed he crashed into the back of Hills car. On the other end of the field, Zanardi heard about this unluck of Villeneuve, fell in deep depression and resigned. The two Ferraris drove safely home their victory after this excitement.
With a perfect third lap, Ralph Schumacher used the last reserves of his car to come close behind Mika Salo and forced him to risk to much in the "Variante Passa". At the scene of the big fight short ago he teared his tires to pieces and ended his move facing against the driving direction. Starting in first gear again, Salo could only watch Schumacher passing by, going on third place and prevented a triple-victory for Ferrari this way. The best that Tyrell could give today was a fifth and sixth place but this was enough to rescue the lead for Heidfeld in the driver-championship. No points in Imola for the unlucky team of Jaguar.
