Note: Because of his new working hours, Sir Roland does his last grand-prix as the team-leader of Williams and will not longer participate in our league. We want to thank him for many hours of exciting and funny races. Good luck to Roland.
As a farewell to the team-leader, Williams got the best team-result in qualifying in this season so far with 2 cars in the third row. Also Ferrari, especially Mika Salo, found a pretty good set-up for the wet track and earned a double-pole. From the Jaguars only Villeneuve could do a good work and the rising star of the last races, Luca Badoer, drove to 4th position.
There was still heaviest rain at Hockenheim for the grand-prix. Some water must have been gone into the engines of Berger and Räikkönen, both made a stall at the start of the race. A close crowd of 6 cars was fighting for the 7th position on the starting-straight on the way to the first corner. In the first chicane Salo, Frentzen and Villeneuve could separate themselves from the rest of the field. On the way from first to second chicane, the two Ferraris, Frentzen with the benefit of slipstreaming Salo, reached the chicane while Villeneuve failed.
(Note: it has to be mentioned here, that this move shows again the terrific luck, luck and once again luck, that the Team of Ferrari - and its team-leader McCasual - is having the whole season this year in each race. Without being that lucky - and the bad luck following the other teams - Ferrari would have earned perhaps a few points this season.)
From this time, Salo and Frentzen could hold their lead unendangered until the end of the race. Villeneuve fell back to 7th position, but could overtake Badoer, Schumacher, Heidfeld and Räikkönen and was on third position again at the Opel-Corner. Verstappen was a bit too optimistic while driving into the Agip-Corner, crashed into Hakkinens back and had to finish his grand-prix.
When Räikkönen reached his pit after a spin-out at the last corner, the two leaders was already in the 2nd chicane, followed by Badoer, who did not go to pits. Villeneuve, Heidfeld, Hakkinen, Irvine and Schumacher fought for the 4th place during the whole second lap, at the end of the field Berger, Hill and Räikkönen, who had a stall and a spin-out if you remember, had a quarrel for the last position. The half of the field went to the pits at the end of its second lap; only Williams kept all three cars on the track, a smart decision, as it would have been shown.
The two Williams of Schumacher and Irvine got on 3rd and 4th position, when they began their third lap, and kept this place until the finish line. Only Hakkinen catched up to them for a short time but then he collided with Irvine in the third corner and had to put down his car there. The third Williams of Berger was fighting with Badoer for the sixth place at that curve, Räikkönen were on pits again and held the last position at this time together with Hill and Heidfeld at the second corner. Then Villeneuve came to the place, where Hakkinen dropped out, drove over a piece of the wreck of Hakkinens car that was still lying around and also dropped out. While Ferrari celebrated the 4th double-victory in this season (only because of their incredible luck as mentioned above) Schumacher and Irvine got place 3 and 4 as the best result for Williams this year and a beautiful farewell gift for the team-leader Roland Stickler. A photo finish took place for the 5th place between Badoer, Räikkönen (who was at last position a half lap ago!) and Berger who failed to bring the third Williams-car into the points.
