Qualifying
Almost business as usual in front of thousands of enthusiastic Tifosi on a cloudy day at Monza. Ferrari was on the way to another triple-pole before Nick Heidfeld as the last of the drivers did his qualifying-turn. He got an absolutely perfect lap and catched the pole and for the Ferraris only positions 2, 3 and 4 was left. At the end, 6 drivers did a lap in less then one minute, only separated by 7 seconds. Villeneuve, Badoer and Irvine had many troubles on their turn, Irvine's mechanics held siesta and forgot to roll the car out to the starting line, so Irvine had to do this job himself.
Race
The problems of Mika Hakkinen with the launch-control of his car went on, he did a stall. Jaguar obviously has a big problem at the start, if it rains. After the first corner the field was separated into three groups, Hill, Salo, Heidfeld and Räikkönen at the front; Berger, Verstappen, Badoer and Frentzen fought for the fifth place and two Jaguars and two Williams at the end. Badoer closed up to the top-group at the third corner where he had a heavy collision with Damon Hill who dropped out after this accident. Salo then could control the race at the top, Verstappen and Badoer did also a good first lap but their wing-setting was too much for their tires so both went to the pits. Gerhard Berger overtook one car after the other and pushed himself to the second place after the first lap. Like in the qualifying, Villeneuve and Irvine could not control their cars very well and together witch Schumacher they still drove at the end of the field.

The second lap was dominated by the duel for the leading between Salo and Berger and was not decided until the Ferrari went to the pits and the Williams could go on without doing so. Behind them Hakkinen and Frentzen fought for the third position, Heidfeld risked too much at the 4th corner and spun out there at 5th position. Of course he was last shortly after that. Frentzen and Verstappen pushed very hard throughout the second and third lap, both went to the pits but the could close up to the two leaders and with a little luck, one of them could have take the lead at the fifth corner, where Salo had to slow down because his tires was absolutely at the end and Berger too could not drive that fast anymore. But the Williams held his advantage until the finish line and did the first Williams-victory in the season, close followed by Frentzen who did the 4th second place in a row. Verstappen and Salo brought in their cars on 3rd and 4th place in a photo-finish.
Hakkinen, who were on 4th position at the beginning of the third lap, had also to put down his car at the fifth corner like a frustrated Nick Heidfeld some time later. So it was on Räikkönen to save two points for Jaguar because Villeneuve still fought more with his car than with his opponents and had to let pass by Irvine and Schumacher in the last half of the third lap.
