The 98-champion chulainn as a substitute for Sir Roland played the Team of Williams. Jaguar wants to dedicate this race to Alex Zanardi, who had a very bad accident in a cart race in September; therefore Kimi Räikkönen will replace him for the rest of the season.

Qualifying
It was on Räikkönen to open the Qualifying-Session. After a break of a couple of races, he had to become familiar with the car again and did not a very good lap. Then the pole-man of the last race, Frentzen, did his turn quite perfect, no one could reach him later and once more it was the pole for him. Almost the whole field was very close together in this Qualifying, from the first to the ninth position the drivers was only separated by two points at the end. Hill, in his Home-Grand-Prix did the best time; and the Williams-Team had a big fight against the clock, but this is always the same story.
Race
While the two men in the first row, Frentzen and Hakkinen, used their advantage and got a clear track, the next five pilots, Hill, Salo, Heidfeld, Badoer and Villeneuve did a very close match wheel-to-wheel to the first corner, the drivers behind them found no gap to overtake one of these pilots. Shortly after that, two Ferraris and two Jaguars fought at the second curve with changing leadings, a heavy thunderstorm began. All cars had to drive carefully then, so no one could really go away. Gerhard Berger, who came from the last starting-place up to third place, spent too much tires on his way and left Club-corner with only rims instead of tires left to his car. Three of the four cars at the front, Frentzen, Villeneuve, Badoer and Hill, went to pits to take rain tires. Only Badoer decided to go on with hard tires and got the lead. The two Ferraris then could make the corner out of the pits; four cars behind them did not and stood right in front of the curve.

As if Badoer had known that and the half of the pilots had changed to rain-tires, the sun came out and smelt the clouds away. Of course the Tyrrell stayed at the top of the field, still followed by two Ferraris and then Heidfeld through the last curve. The 3 Jaguars and Verstappen matched each other for 5th place on the straight between 4th and 5th corner. When the leader was on the way to leave the last corner, Salo, Schumacher and Irvine fought for the 9th place at Club-corner at the other end of the field. The team of Tyrrell told Badoer urgently to go to pits now, his car had no fuel-points, no brakes anymore and only two tire-points left but the driver went on and stayed out on the track. Again it was the right decision.

The pursuers all had to visit their pits, to change to hard and soft tires again. Hill and Frentzen blocked each other and the mechanics already did a bad job. Badoer, now leading by a comfortable margin did the right mixture of a safe (remember the shape of his car!) but quick driving and won his second race in a row. The two red racers could almost close the gap, but the attack was to late, second place for Hill and third one for Frentzen.
But the real drama of this race happened at the second corner: First, Heidfeld and Irvine dropped away their cars on one of the many oil-spots at the Maggotts-Corner. Then Räikkönen, in a crowd hard fighting for the fifth place, wanted too much and crashed with failing brakes into the back of his team-mate Villeneuve which led to a drop-out for both Jaguars. Short time after that, in front of the 4th corner, Ralf Schumacher had to put down his car. Hakkinen saved a forth place for Jaguar, 5th and 6th place was left to Salo and Verstappen.
