Qualifying
The qualifiying-session was dominated by the fight between Tyrell and Ferrari for the pole. Frentzen was the first one out on the track with a good pace but he had to brake hard in some corners to avoid overshooting. After the Ferrari it was for Berger and Zanardi to conquer, but neither the Williams Team nor the Jaguar Team found the right setting for this course so the sixth place in the grid was the best one for a non-Ferrari or Tyrell-car. Then Button rolled out, because of a long night before and a little circulatory disturbance he also could not handle the spanish track and went on 9th finally. Salo seemed to be the sure poleman the third time in a row after his lap because Hill and Verstappen could not reach him as Nick Heidfeld ran an almost perfect turn and grabbed the first place. Only 3 points decided between the first and the fifth place (as much as between 5th and 6th) in the starting grid at the end of the session, all 5 cars with soft tires, obviously the better choice today.
Race
Best start for Jacques Villeneuve, who did a quick-start, he went 4 spaces, overtook hill immediately on the first move and collided with Frentzen but both were lucky because nothing happend to their cars. On the fifth move Hill, Heidfeld, Salo, Frentzen, Räikkönen, Button, Villeneuve and Berger reached the first corner, Zanardi and Verstappen missed, Irvine and Schumacher were too far away. Hill had only 4 spaces left in the curve. Next turn Heidfeld went in front and the 3 Ferraris occupied all exit-fields of the corner, so behind them a couple of hard manouvers had to be made, Button had to shift down from fifth to second gear. Next moves Frentzen, Salo and Heidfeld went away from the rest of the field which was close fighting for the 4th position. On the way from the Seat over the Würth to the Campsa corner, Damon Hill fell back from 4th to 10th place, he was the only one, who failed to reach the fifth curve. While Heidfeld finished the first lap, Salo went to pit and Frentzen overtook Heidfeld on the starting-straight. At the same move, Schumacher on the other end of the field was on his way to the "La Caixa" Corner.

At the entrance of the first corner Irvine caused a collision with Jenson Button and threw him out of the race. Button was lightly injured and will miss the next race. Kimi Räikönnen became a victim of the hot temperatures and his inexperience - his first grand-prix - and blew up the engine of his car shortly after he had finished his first lap. For the third place a close fight between Berger, Heidfeld and Salo took place at the Seat-Corner, all three missed it in fifth gear! In front of them Frentzen and Verstappen were matching for the lead. Further on, Berger lost the contact with the Tyrell and Ferrari and the cars of Williams and Jaguar struggled for the fifth position, on the way to the second corner, Schumacher overtook Hill.

The third lap began with a double-lead for Tyrell, both cars with few tire and no engine points, but did not go to pit. A wrong decision as shown later - Heidfeld's engine blew up only two moves after that in the first corner. Salo also went further, only Frentzen had to visit his pit, he had no tire-points left.
Meanwhile the crowd of Williams and Jaguars went to pit, the mechanics of Villeneuve and Berger did a good work, with the refreshed cars the two drivers could start their final attack. Hill did not have to pit and could give away his last position and took sixth place. On the straight to the sixth corner, fighting side-by-side with salo for 1st rank, the engine of the Tyrell was at the end so the last Tyrell in the race dropped out. After that Salo could drive home his (first) victory safely. Frentzen lost all but one of his tires at the fifth corner so Berger with an excellent finish overtook him in the last corners and went on second place in front of the Ferrari.
In the struggle for fourth place, Hill burned out his tires at the Campsa-Corner and Irvine blew up his engine there. Only Villeneuve drove a perfect line through this corner. Hill staid in front of the Jaguar until the last corner, where he could only drive in 4th gear and had to let pass by Villeneuve in 5th gear without opposition. The last car to reach the finish line was Zanardi on sixth place on move behind Hill.
