Qualifying
The Qualifying saw 2 matches. The first between Ferrari and Jaguar for the pole with all 6 drivers within 20 seconds, with the better end for Villeneuve, only Räikkönen on his first race at Suzuka collected too much errors and became 9th. The second match took place between Williams and Tyrrell one and a half minute behind the 2 top-teams, where Berger got the best place with 6th position.
Race
Jacques Villeneuve used his pole to drive safely away at the front, close followed by Frentzen and Salo. Hill made a stall (Ferrari obviously has a big starting-problem) and was overtaken by the whole field after a short time. Hakkinen and Berger also made it comfortable through the first two corners. Behind these drivers a drama happened at the entrance of the second curve. First Schumacher crashed with Räikkönen that hard, the Jaguar-pilot dropped out, immediately after this crash, Irvine slided into this two cars and he and his teammate Schumacher had also to put down their cars at this place. A very short race for this 3 drivers. For a short time Frentzen took the lead, but at the last corner it was on Hakkinen to lead the field because the Ferrari had to go to pits.

During the second lap, Frentzen slowly made it up again to Hakkinen, Villeneuve had to pay tribute to his aggressive driving-style and fell back, Verstappen and Heidfeld on the other hand made up place by place. Salo was to go on third position when Heidfeld shot him out at the 3rd curve. But the tires of the Tyrrell-pilot was damaged on this crash and two curves later, Heidfeld also dropped out and so he missed the last chance to prevent a triple-success of Ferrari in the championship. At the end of the lap, the leader Hakkinen went to the pits and so Frentzen could take the first position again.

With fresh tires then he chased the Ferrari, who had gear-box-problems between the second and fifth corner, so at last Hakkinen could pass Frentzen out of the fifth corner and held the lead until the finish line. Villeneuve, who was on the pits too, made a perfect third lap and could overtake Frentzen immediately in front of the finish line, so it was a double victory for Jaguar. Verstappen finished his race shortly behind Frentzen at the 4th place. On the struggle for the fifth place between Berger and Hill another Ferrari became the victim of a collision between the 2 drivers at the 5th corner. Berger brought home the 5th place and Luca Badoer ("The Talented" as he was called by his team-leader) earned the sixth place and 1 point although he dropped out at the last corner because the tires of his car was absolutely at their end.
