Note: The Team of Tyrrell (all 3 drivers) was directed by Akira Yakakaze because the regular team-leader, Christian E., missed the race.
It was a big match between Tyrrell, Jaguar and Ferrari; all drivers of these 3 teams did a quick lap with a time-difference of only about 20 seconds between the fastest (Salo) and the slowest (Verstappen). But Heidfeld did the best lap of these drivers, the other ones also was close together, separated by only two points at last. Only Villeneuve had problems with the track and became 11th. Williams, especially Berger, did a bad job this day.
The love-story between Tyrrell and the USA continues. Almost the whole first lap saw two hard fights. At the top, Heidfeld, Hakkinen and Frentzen struggled for the lead, 1 stop behind them a crowd of 5 to 6 cars, Hill, Räikkönen, Irvine, Villeneuve, Badoer and Verstappen (who made a quick-start) fought for the 4th place so close thogether, only one free space was left over at the third corner. Berger continued his bad performance and held the last place during the whole race. He even could not reach Salo, which did his third stall in this season. On the part of the oval-track Badoer used the power of his engine to go on the top, but he had to pit shortly, so Frentzen took the lead for a short time, but at the first corner, Badoer was back from the pits, overtook Frentzen again and held the lead until the finish.
In the second lap, Räikkönen and Hakkinen could pass the Ferraris of Frentzen and Salo. While Räikkönen fixed his second position, Hakkinen drove over a very dangerous oil-spot in the sixth corner and dropped out driving on third place at this time. Shortly after him, Schumacher and Villeneuve finished their race at the same place. The two Ferraris drove together that close, the collided several times and brought themselves to the edge of a double-drop-out for Ferrari in front of the sixth corner. The rest of the lap they had to drive carefully and stay away from all other cars, to reach the pits.
Verstappen and Heidfeld both did a quick pit-stop between 2nd and 3rd lap and so they could start their final attack. Verstappen overtook Frentzen and Räikkönen and at the sixth corner he got the second place because the 2 other cars missed to reach the corner. The Jaguar was already very weak at this time, but with the last reserves he could defend the attack of Frentzen at the last corner and came in on third place, close followed by the Ferrari. A hard wheel-to-wheel fight took place between Heidfeld and Salo at the last curve, the Tyrrell had the better engine and got 5th place with an advantage of a few inch in front of Salo. Williams finished a poor race on the last two places.
Like last year, it was again pole-position and double-victory for the Team of Tyrrell, the blue ones obviously really love this circuit. Since Heidfeld could not win the race and Frentzen made 3 points, the Ferrari-pilot fixed the driver-championship for himself on this day one race before the end of the season.
