The first two rows for the starting grid was only a fight between Jaguar and Ferrari, at least separated only by a total of 2 points and a time-gap of about 10 seconds. It was Zanardi, who held the Pole-position for a long time until last years pole-man and winner Damon Hill drove his turn and went in front. Only about one minute later, Mika Hakkinen finished his lap 6 seconds faster and therefore the racer from Finland could start the race from the top.
Last one to qualify was Nick Heidfeld but he failed the 4th place by 7 seconds, so the fifth place was the best to get for the Tyrell-Team. Obviously the Williams-Team choosed the wrong kind of rain-tyres, all three cars slided too much in the corners and only a ninth place was the result for this Team.
Mika Salo made a stall and collided immediately after the start with Verstappen. Zanardi and Hill held the top of the field during the whole first lap with changing leadership. Hakkinen drove carefully behind them and was followed by 4 cars: Heidfeld, Salo, Villeneuve and Verstappen who spent his second collission-point in the first corner.
While the two leaders finished their first lap in the pits, Salo and Hakkinen stayed on the track, the Ferrari shortly could close up to the two cars at the front at the beginning of the second lap. Meanwhile at the last corner, Villeneuve collided with a Williams and had to drop out at his home-grand-prix right in front of the pit-entrance. All three Tyrells also went to the pits only to get fresh tires, Verstappen and Badoer did NOT repair the damaged bodies of their cars. At the 4th corner Hakkinen tried to attack the leading Ferrari of Damon Hill, drove in fifth gear into the curve and had left 4 spaces for his second stop after this. Next move he shifted down in 3rd and spent the rest of his tires at the exit of the corner. On the other end of the field, Berger, Badoer and Frentzen started their second lap at this time. On the rest of this lap, Heidfeld could close up to Hill until the last corner, Hakkinen spun out twice - first at the hairpin (5th curve) and then at the last corner - Irvine, Salo and Verstappen fought for the fifth place and the tires of Gerhard Berger failed their job at the fifth corner.
While Hill began his third and final lap on the track, Heidfeld and Zanardi
drove to the pits again and Hill could use this advantage to win the Canadian
grand-prix again, because the Tyrell and the Jaguar could not close up enough
anymore. The only one of the field, who did not come to the pits (except
Hill) was Frentzen, therefore he could give away his last position.
While Hill and Heidfeld had finished their race, Zanardi at the last corner
was thinking about a save third place and forgot to take a look in the rear-view
mirror where Salo - after a perfect third lap - was closing up to him and
could even overtake him by using the slipstream of the Jaguar and so a second
Ferrari took a place at the podium followed by the unlucky Zanardi and Eddie
Irvine.
A close fight at the last corner took place for the 6th place (and last
point left) between Verstappen and Frentzen who also had a good third lap,
but only until this corner. The only chance for the Ferrari to overtake
the Tyrell was to go in fifth gear into the curve, he did but a little too
fast and one space too much so he spun out and therefore even lost the 7th
place to Hakkinen.
Completely overtaxed by the weather-conditions, the state of his car and
the sadness about his last position Luca Badoer spun out at the fifth and
sixth corner.
