Note: We want to welcome our new league-member WÜbi as the new team-leader of Williams.
A big day for Ferrari. No one else could reach the performance of the red ones today, all three drivers did a perfect lap and so a triple-pole was the result. Damon Hill drove probably a new world-record for the Hungarian track. Verstappen, Hakkinen and Badoer completed the first three rows. William's new team-leader got his best car on seventh position in the first qualifying of his career.
Hill and Frentzen, Frentzen with a quick-start, could use their starting-positions and held the lead until the third corner, where Heidfeld and Badoer caught them up. Through the next couple of corners, these 4 drivers fought for the lead. 1 Stop behind them, Hakkinen, Irvine, Berger and Verstappen matched for the fourth place. Salo fell back from third to ninth position. Through the last corners the four leaders became three, Hill was overtaken by Irvine and Hakkinen and attacked by Berger. A group of four cars, Salo, Schumacher, Verstappen and Räikkönen was driving for 8th position at the 7th curve while the leaders was ready to leave the last corner and go to the pits. Also Hakkinen, Hill, Schumacher and Salo went to their pit.
The mechanics of Tyrrell, especially those of Heidfeld, worked perfectly, the car with the number 4 took the lead alone at the third corner and held it until the finish, mostly 1 - 2 stops ahead from the pursuers, Badoer and Frentzen. Irvine was shortly on second place, but then he got problems with his used soft tires and fell back again. The pole-man Hill were only at 8th position at this time of the race, fighting with Verstappen, Räikkönen and Berger for 6th position at the first corner; Schumacher and Salo left the pit lane and Villeneuve was to finish his first lap. When Heidfeld began his third and last lap without going to pits (soft tires !), Badoer and Frentzen was at the last corner, the Ferrari had to go to the pits again, the Tyrrell did not. 3 Stops (!!) behind them a crowd of 6 cars, two Williams, two Jaguars, Hill and Verstappen fought for the 4th position during the last 3 corners. Räikkönen fought too hard and spun out at the ninth curve. All drivers, except the leader Heidfeld and Badoer (with no tires left anymore) went to the pits. It seemed to become an impressive double-victory for Tyrrell.
There is nothing much to say about the third lap. Frentzen could came near to Heidfeld, but never close enough to endanger his victory, Badoer had to drive carefully but saved the 3rd place, Hill was not fast enough to reach him and got on 4th. For the last points a duel evolved between Hakkinen and Irvine with the better end for the Jaguar-pilot.
This grand-prix was the second race in our league-history (58 races until now), where all cars reached the finish and no one had to drop out.
