Qualifying
The session was opened by Luca Badoer, who drove the first time at Magny Cours, so he did a very careful lap. Then Hill and Frentzen did their lap on soft tires with a big success, flying round the track quickly. After them, it was to Jaguar-pilot Zanardi to take this challange from Ferrari, but already at the first corner he had trouble with the gearing and was a little confused for the rest of his turn. His team-mates also were nervous about the demonstration of power from the Ferrari-Team and did the same bad work. The Tyrrell-Team changed it's strategy and did the next two laps of it's drivers on soft tires also, Heidfeld and Verstappen were better than Badoer but could not reach the speed of Ferrari this day so only place 4 to 6 was left for Tyrrell. Salo then completed a red triple-pole and was the only pilot to manage a lap without any penalties. The Williams-drivers obviosly had choosen a completely wrong setup for their cars, Irvine's car had not a little bit of ground-effect and slided through one corner after the other. After the session he told, his gas-pedal got stuck.
Race
It was still cloudy at the beginning of the race, Frentzen and Salo used their starting-positions to went away from the field, but then, on the way to the Adelaide-Corner, heavy rain began. The two leaders had to shift down very hardly at the curve, so Hill and Badoer could pass them and Berger, Zanardi, Heidfeld and Verstappen closed up. Badoer took the leadership at the fifth corner and never lost it anymore until the finish of the grand-prix. In the meantime, after some weather-changes, the rain stopped and the track became dry. At the end of the first lap he went to the pits, close followed by Salo, who made it up again. For the third place at this time, in the last corner was a struggle between Hill, Berger Frentzen and Hakkinen who collided very strong with the car of Heidfeld two moves before at the Imola-curve, so Heidfeld had to drop out.

At the beginning of the second lap, the sun came out definitive. Badoer held his leadership always one or two stops in front of a Ferrari - Salo (spent his last fuel-point in front of the Imola-curve) or Frentzen who fought himself back to the second place in this lap. While the leader spent his last tire at the exit of the last corner, Berger was on a safe 4th place at the Chateu-d'Eau-corner, Zanardi, Hill and Hakkinen (already with a weak engine) fought at the 6th corner and the last car of the field, Schumacher, was on the way to the Nuerburgring-corner. Hakkinen, and shortly after him Irvine, blew up their engines shortly in front of the 8th corner.

After a die-roll of 18, Badoer (with no tires and only one fuel-point left) decided to go on and not to drive to the pits. Frentzen had to visit his pit to get his damaged engine repaired and lost one stop to the Tyrrell again. He made up the gap to Badoer during the third lap and finished the race close behind Badoer on second position. Also the following cars up to Zanardi all went to the pits. Salo, Berger and Hill had a close fight for the third place throughout the third lap, which was not decided before the last corner where Hill used the power of the Ferrari-engine to stay in front of Berger on the way to the finish-line. Salo had to shift down, because no fuel and no tires were left anymore, Verstappen overtook him in the last curve and saved two more points for Tyrrell. Villeneuve and Schumacher dropped out at the end of the field and Zanardi with the last surviving Jaguar threw away his car on an oil-spot in the last corner.
