Qualifying
Heavy rain at the Nürburgring. The drivers of Jaguar and Tyrell could handle the poor conditions very well, only Villeneuve had a few problems on his fast lap. Mika Hakkinen had some troubles with his gear-box, like the other two drivers of the team, but altough he was fast enough to go on pole. The Tyrell-Team found a good setup for its cars and the newest member of the team, Luca Badoer, went on third position, close followed by his team-mates. Gerhard Berger and Eddie Irvine did good jobs as well, only the everlasting problem of the Williams-Team, the time, prevented a better position than the 7th. The red racers of Ferrari drove, as if the had dry-condition-tires on their cars, especially Salo and Hill did lousy jobs this day. Only Frentzen learned from the mistakes of his colleagues and could turn off a completely desaster for his team and went on second place, a position, from which 4 victories had been made this season so far.
Race
The last of the starting grid, Ralf Schumacher, continued his bad performance of this weekend and made a stall at the very beginning. The first three of the qualifying also left the first corner leading, followed by a crowd of 6 cars, when Hakkinen failed to enter the Valvoline-corner and Badoer and Frentzen went away from the rest of the field. This duell at the top continued until far into the third lap, always fighting wheel-to-wheel for the lead, colliding almost every turn but without any damage for one of the cars. The fight only was shortly interrupted twice, when Frentzen went to the pits to get fresh tires. The following field was leaded by different drivers during the first lap, mostly by Hakkinen and Berger. On the way to the sixth corner Salo could slipstream three times in a row and brought himself from 8th to 4th position this way. When the two leaders finished the last corner, Irivine at the other end of the field could not get his tires to the right temperature and already left the 5th curve. Frentzen, Salo and the whole Jaguar-Team were in the pits between first and second lap.

During the whole second lap Mika Hakkinen held the third place and Jos Verstappen closed up. Behind Salo a close fight between Jaguar, Williams and the Tyrell of Nick Heidfeld took place. All corners always was fully occupied, so Damon Hill never had a chance to find a free lane to pass one of these cars until some of them drove to the pits at the end of lap two. Also Irvine speeded up at the end of this lap, he jumped in sixth gear from the Bit-Corner to the last corner and could give away his last place at the first corner of the third lap.

On the way out of the Dunlop-Corner, the engine of Badoer shortly misfired and he had to shift down before the next corner, because also the tires where at the end of their life. Frentzen took the chance and overtook him on the straight to the 6th corner. Badoer could not fight back anymore and so Frentzen drove away to an unendangered victory - again a winner from the second starting place. On the way to the Dunlop corner, Verstappen finaly broke away from Hakkinen, made it up to Badoer, who had to let him pass in front of the finish line to save more points for Verstappen. Hakkinen used up his last fuel-point in front of the sixth corner. Salo and Villeneuve reached him at the next curve. The Canadian driver then tried to repeat the manouvre of Irvine from the last lap (in 6th gear into the last corner) but failed. Therefore Mika Salo, who already contented himself with the fifth place, took the last reserves out of his car and reached the finish on 4th place. The Jaguars came in on places 5 to 7, only 8th place for Damon Hill and the rest was left to the three cars of Williams, who all had a disappointing last lap. Nick Heidfeld, the championship-leader before this race, who lost place by place during the whole race, overstressed his tires at the last corner and was the only driver, who did not finish the race.
