It was once again a demonstration of the power of Ferrari. Like the race before in Hungary, the result of the Qualifying was a triple-pole for the red ones. After Räikkönen and Verstappen did their turn, Frentzen rolled out and did a fabulous round. All following drivers could not stand the pressure to beat Frentzens performance, only Hill and Salo came near to their team-mate and Luca Badoer leaded the "rest" of the field. The new team leader of Williams had to pay tribute to his inexperience and drove 3 careful but slow turns with his drivers. Ralf Schumacher forgot to place his car at the starting line and started his qualifying-lap almost out of the pits, but then his mechanics told him to put his car on the track before starting his turn.
Villeneuve did his third quick-start this season to the price of a collision right after the start, while Salo on the other hand made his second stall in this season. He should have a word with his mechanics after the race, because these stall led him to last place after the whole filed had passed the first corner. Until the 5th corner Hakkinen, Hill and Frentzen were at the top of the field witch changing leadings, Berger, Schumacher, Badoer and Villeneuve fought for the 4th place, the rest struggled close to each other for the 8th position. On the way to the 6th curve there was a pre-decision, because both Ferraris failed to reach the corner while Hakkinen could enter it without any problems and for equalization Villeneuve could close up to Hill and Frentzen. Jos Verstappen took the last reserves out of his car to reach the group fighting for the 5th place but at the bus-stop-chicane he slid through the heavy traffic into the back of his team-mate Heidfeld and dropped out. Heidfeld spun out one move later right in front of the pit-entrance.
Hakkinen began his second lap with his car left in a very good shape, the two following Ferraris decided to go on with only a few tire-points left over, and Luca Badoer came up to third place at Eau Rouge. The Jaguar drove safely at the first place, behind him Frentzen, Badoer and Hill fought close together for the 2nd place almost of the second lap, Frentzen and Badoer always preventing a collision and Hill searching a line avoiding the dangerous fields. From 5th to 6th curve Hakkinen again added one stop advantage to the following cars and looked optimistically forward to win the race because he has spent only one tire point the whole race until now. Salo at the other end of the field was lucky enough to overtake Irvine and Heidfeld (both visited their pit) and give away his last position for a short time.
The leader started his last turn, again without driving to pits and driving home his victory - he will have had spent only 4 tires and some fuel the whole race at the end - the following 5 cars, Badoer, Hill, Frentzen, Villeneuve and Räikkönen all had to go to their mechanics to refresh tires and to get repaired some things at their cars. Badoer lost his little advantage to Hill and Frentzen again and tried all he could to stay in front of the 2 red ones to save the last theoretic chance to win the constructors-championship for Tyrrell. (Ferrari needed to make only 2 points more than Tyrrell in this race to fix the championship 3 races before the end of the season). At the 6th corner he risked too much, overstressed his tires and dropped out. Hill and Frentzen then drove very safely to come in on second and third place, Hill had to let pass by Frentzen in front of the finish line to earn more points for Frentzen. Irvine could stay in front of Villeneuve and Räikkönen and made it to 4th place, Salo could already overtake Räikkönen and Irvine at the last corner, spending his last tires, and brought home one point for the 6th place.
The constructors-championship was now definitely gone to Ferrari, in the driver's championship Frentzen was leading in front of Salo and Hill. The only "not-Ferrari-driver", still having a chance for the title after this race is Nick Heidfeld, 14 points behind Frenzten by three races left in the season.
