Sunshine all around time for soft tires-professionals (but they are always only driving for Ferrari). So, Damon Hill, champion of the last season, does the best he can and this is more than enough to get the pole-position. Jos Verstappen (Tyrrell) stands beside him in the first line. Best qualifying-time: Toranosuke Takagi (Jordan) in 1.16:29.
Very bad weather-conditions in Melbourne: black clouds and heavy raindrops all around! Toransoke Takagi (Jordan) and Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell), both of them bloody FD-Rookies, dominate the scene in the first lap.
In the middle of the second turn Eddie Irvine (Williams), Damon Hill and Heinz-Harald Frentzen (both Ferrari) make up ground and try to attack the leaders. As Takagi slips out of the race he strikes on oil, I guess there is only Barrichello (Tyrrell), who can win the race and he does, driving without any mistakes! Irvine (Williams) and Hill (Ferrari) have a very great fight for the second and third place and Irvine, who often likes to take too much risks when he drives, does a very good job this time and comes in on second place, very closely followed by Damon Hill.
