Sunshine all above as Nik Heidfeld (Tyrrell) reaches his second pole-position this year, not very comfortable in front of Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Ferrari), Jos Verstappen(Tyrrell) and Mika Salo (Ferrari). Jordan decides to be not important this time, but – of course – best qualifying-time in 1.09:18 for buzzin’ hornet Mika Hakkinen. After uprising in Belgium and Italy, Tyrrell seems to be strong enough now to fight back in qualifying at the end of the saison!
The sun shines down on the pretty new race-track of Indianapolis. During a very exciting race Nik Heidfeld (Tyrrell) takes his chance and wins his third race this season, followed close behind by Jos Verstappen (Tyrrell), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Ferrari) and Mika Hakkinen (Jordan), who do a very hard and close match during the entire last lap.
And once more Damon Hill (Ferrari) seems to be the lucky looser of a race. He slips out during third lap, but today his heavy competitor Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell) has not even a chance to get some essentially needed championship-points – he comes in only as last but one on ninth place! For half-season-dominator Barrichello world-championship is out of reach more than ever! He needs 13 points more than Damon Hill – but now there are only two races left. Just as previous year it seems to be that nerves of Tyrrell-pilots are not strong enough at the end of a long season.
