Just the same as in Australia: best sunny weather-conditions, allowing to drive with soft tires all that Damon Hill (Ferrari) needs to reach pole-position, only beeing slightly ahead of Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell). Reduced to the fact: second pole in the second GP of the saison. Best qualifying-time: Alex Zanardi (driver of the Jordan-team, as usual) in 1.14:02.
Sunshine everywhere, but worst-case-scenario at the starting grid: Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Mika Salo (both in Ferrari) and Alex Zanardi (Jordan) overstress their gear-systems and stall their cars. A very bad situation for not less than a quarter of all drivers!
The first lap is dominated by Damon Hill (Ferrari), but bad luck in the Juncao-corner throws him back on the 4th place. At the end of the first lap, he does the very best stop ever seen in more then two FD-seasons: hes the only driver stopping in the pit, has a very quick stop and after his return to the road he finds himself back on the 2nd place, overtaking Mika Hakkinen (Jordan) and Jos Verstappen (Tyrrell). Depending on a famous strategy he attacks the leading pilot Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell) at the beginning of the third lap. Both of them did a very hard fight. Hill wins the race in front of Barrichello in a very excitingly photo-finish..
