The sun smiles high above as Jordan gives cheers for Mika Hakkinen, who conquers fourth pole-position in a row for the yellow hornets! Not far behind Mika Salo (Ferrari) reaches second starting-place, followed very close by Alex Zanardi (Jordan) and Ralf Schumacher (Williams). The same as the last time in Hockenheim – best qualifying-time (1.08:88), no faults and least stops of all for the Jordan-pilot in pole-position. Jordan plays in an extra qualifying-league at the moment.
As in qualifying there is sunshine all around and the entire field drives close together for almost two laps. There is only less freedom of movement for most drivers. At this time the race is not so thrillingly. But than a hazardous ride happens … Jos Verstappen wins the race, driving not a F1-racing car but a real damned wreckage for more than one lap. As he crosses the finishing-line there is not only one component left of his car. At this time, a very heavy fight takes place in his back. Mika Salo (Ferrari) is hunted down by an uncompromisingly Alex Zanardi (Jordan) and loses his nerves in the last curve: he slips out after a very risky maneuver. As in Germany Williams makes up ground and reaches third place once more. Ralf Schumacher comes in closely followed by Damon Hill (Ferrari). No points left for Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell), so it seems as if Damon Hill is the quiet real winner of the Grand Prix.
