Heavy rain in Magny-Cours. Second time this season Jordan gets a pole-position. This time it goes to Alex Zanardi, who does also best qualifying-time in 1.25:77. Close to him team-colleague Mika Hakkinen stands on second starting-position. As a very great surprise Ralf Schumacher and Eddie Irvine (both Williams) do a fabulous qualifying and reach third and fourth starting-place.
Friendly weather and sunshine everywhere above the circuit. Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell) wins the race in front of Damon Hill (Ferrari) in a very excitingly photo-finish. Close behind them and all within just the same number of stops Mika Hakkinen (Jordan), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Ferrari), Mika Salo (Ferrari) and Alex Zanardi (Jordan) come in on place three to six. No points left for Williams, but the brave bad-luck-guys of this team are the real tragic heroes of France: Eddie Irvine falls out being on leading position because of engine troubles on his second turn and Gerhard Berger also falls out being in front of all other cars because of overshooting a curve (also in his second turn). But not enough, Ralf Schumacher falls out in leading position on his third turn, overshooting the same curve as Berger one turn ago.
