On a cloudy day in Barcelona, the Ferraris find their way back to the top: Poleposition goes to Mika Salo in a very famous way, comfortably ahead of Alex Zanardi (Jordan) and Damon Hill (Ferrari). Toranosuke Takagi (Jordan) also does a top-class performance: only 11 (!) mistakes are enough to carrie him to the last starting-position! Best qualifying-time: Alex Zanardi (Jordan of course) in 1.17:37.
Pretty sunshine everywhere in Spain and Nik Heidfeld (Tyrrell) does his best. Getting in front at the middle of the first lap, no other driver gets a chance to beat him for the rest of the race. So Tyrrell celebrates the fourth victory in the fifth race this year! Damon Hill (Ferrari) is the only pilot strong enough to keep up with Heidfeld and so he’s able to get in on second place with only a little distance. Williams does a very brave fight and the reward is Eddie Irvine on the 3rd , Ralf Schumacher on the 4th and Gerhard Berger on the 5th place. Worst case scenario for Jordan: once again there are no points left for that team it seems as if Jordan should win the ‘lousiest player’-special award this year. Yellow bunglers all around …
After nearly a third of the season Tyrrell stays in front of all rankings, but Ferrari takes up the chase in both championships. Williams seems to be well beaten and particularly the team of Jordan is hopeless lost.
