Sunshine all over the mountains of Austria – it’s the second race in a row Jordan reaches pole-position. This time, Mika Hakkinen, winner of the Austrian Grand Prix 1999, enjoys the great feeling of being on leading-position. Best qualifying-time also goes to Mika Hakkinen in 1.26:17. Damon Hill (Ferrari) stands beside him in a very short distance.
Friendly weahter of qualifying turns to rain during the whole – mostly boring - race. It is the day of Mika Hakkinen (Jordan) – pole-position and at the end of the race a clear victory for the last-year-winner. So, two of his four victorys in Formula De-history take place in Austria! Only Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Ferrari) is fast enough to hold Hakkinen’s speed – logically he comes in on second place. What happens to the up-to-now-dominators of the driver-championship? Damon Hill (Ferrari) has an accident during his first lap, Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell) hasn’t enough brakes to stay in line during his second lap and Nik Heidfeld’s (Tyrrell) brakes are gone in the third lap.
Today Tyrrell is the great looser – only two points left for the successful major-team. It seems as if Ferrari is the more dangerous candidate for winning the constructor-championship than Tyrrell is.
