pole-position followed more than close by Damon Hill (Ferrari) and Jos Verstappen (Tyrrell). So it’s an extraordinary impression that only drivers of Ferrari and Jordan start from pole since the Grand Prix of Spain, 26th of February! And of course best qualifying-time goes to … yes, Jordan! Mika Hakkinen flies around the circuit in 1.24:13.
The belgium audience is amazed by the most curious Grand Prix of the year. Only five drivers can reach the finishing-line after three laps – and all their cars are simply wreckages! Damon Hill (Ferrari) and Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell) – both favourites for winning world-championship – drop out, getting into bad company with many other drivers. Nik Heidfeld (Tyrrell) uses his chance and wins his second Grand Prix of the season, followed very close by his team-colleague Jos Verstappen. Third and fourth place go to Mika Hakkinen and Alex Zanardi (both Jordan).
Nothing new on top of world-championship: Damon Hill (Ferrari/62) in front, followed by Rubens Barrichello (Tyrrell/58), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Ferrari/41) and Nik Heidfeld (Tyrrell/38). The chances to win championship are only theory for other drivers.
